How do I create coupons or promo codes?

Coupons and promo codes can be a handy way to entice buyers to purchase from your shop. Check out this tutorial for a walkthrough of creating coupons or read on for more info.

Coupons are created in your shop dashboard. Click the “add coupon” button to start editing a new coupon. In this example we will walk you through creating a coupon to offer free shipping to first-time customers.

The first two boxes are for the code used for your coupon and a description. Codes must be unique across the site, so if your code won’t save, it’s possible someone else is already using it. Add your shop name or some random numbers to customize it. The description is for your use in remembering what the coupon code does when looking at your coupon code list so include a short statement.

Under the General tab you will find the basic coupon settings, which we will review here:

  • Discount Type
    • Fixed discount – a set dollar amount off the total
    • Percentage Discount
  • Apply to all my products
    • Checked means this coupon is valid on all products (most common).
    • Unchecked select products to apply the coupon to in the Usage Restrictions tab.
  • Coupon Amount
    • Enter the number of the fixed or percentage discount. Do not include special characters (like % or $).
    • Enter a 0 if this is only a free shipping coupon.
  • Allow Free Shipping
    • Checked means this coupon will also apply free shipping to the order when the code is used
    • Unchecked means your standard shipping rates will apply
  • Coupon Expiry Date
    • If this coupon is only valid for a certain time period, enter the date the coupon expires.
    • If there is no expiration date leave this blank.

Under the Usage Restrictions tab you will find the restriction settings, which we will review here:

  • Minimum and Maximum Spend
    • Leave blank if not applicable
    • Enter a whole number for the total order value (excluding shipping) without the $ if setting a coupon minimum or maximum. In this example, the coupon is only valid on orders over $250.
  • Individual use only
    • Checked means that customers cannot use another coupon from your shop (no coupon stacking) in the same order.
    • Unchecked means customers can use additional coupons in the same order.
  • Exclude sale items
    • Checked means that items marked as “on sale” will not be included in the coupon. Most likely this would be used for discount-based coupons as opposed to free-shipping coupons (but totally up to you!).
    • Unchecked means that items marked as “on sale” can still use the coupon.
  • Products
    • If you did not select “Apply to all my products”, use this to identify the specific products from your shop that the coupon works for. Uses a search to find your product. Add all products that apply. An example of this use would be free shipping on starter packs or a special discount on your newest collection.
    • Leave blank if not applicable (most common)
  • Exclude Products
    • If you want to specifically exclude one or more products enter them here. Uses a search to find your products.
    • Leave blank if not applicable (most common)
  • Email Restrictions
    • Hopefully, you never need to use this, but if there are particular retailers you do NOT want this coupon to work for, enter their email address here. Please note it must be the email address they are registered for the site with.
    • Leave blank if not applicable (most common)

Under the final tab, Usage Restrictions, you will find the coupon limits settings, which we will review here:

  • Usage limit per coupon
    • Leave blank if not applicable
    • Enter a whole number for the total order value (excluding shipping) without the $ if setting a coupon minimum or maximum. In this example, the coupon is only valid on orders over $250.
  • Usage limit to x items
    • Checked means that customers cannot use another coupon from your shop (no coupon stacking) in the same order.
    • Unchecked means customers can use additional coupons in the same order.
  • Usage limit per user
    • Checked means that items marked as “on-sale” will not be included in the coupon. Most likely this would be used for discount-based coupons as opposed to free-shipping coupons (but totally up to you!).
    • Unchecked means that items marked as “on-sale” can still use the coupon.

Don’t forget to click “Add Coupon” or “Save Changes” (if you’re editing an existing coupon) to save your work! You can edit a coupon or delete it at any time from the Coupons tab in shop settings.
